Vegan After 40 – Plant-Based vs Vegan Eating

Plant-based” refers to a diet that solely or primarily consists of plant foods. A whole food, plant-based diet also excludes oils and processed packaged foods. “Vegan” indicates that animals are excluded from the diet, products, and lifestyle decisions.

Vegan diets eliminate all animal products, while plant-based diets do not necessarily eliminate animal products, but focus on eating mostly plants, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

What about Eggs?
People who follow vegan diets abstain from consuming any animal products, including dairy, meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and honey. Though many on plant-based diets tend to be okay with eggs as an ingredient in food that they eat such as bread.

Why is avocado not vegan?
Many vegans avoid eating honey because commercial honey farming may harm the health of bees. Honey’s main function is to provide bees with carbohydrates and other essential nutrients like amino acids, antioxidants, and natural antibiotics.

In a recent national news story, it was suggested that avocados, as well as almonds, kiwi, and butternut squash, technically shouldn’t be designated vegan because of a system called “migratory beekeeping.” Commercial farms in states like California have to shuttle bees between farms in the backs of trucks because there are not enough native bees in the region to pollinate the plants on which they grow.

How far will vegans go?
Some vegans will not eat almonds. The key issue raised by those who feel that almonds cannot be seen as vegan is the way the trees are pollinated. Whilst the USDA Agricultural Research Service has had some success developing self-pollinating almond trees, most production comes from trees that rely on insects for pollination.

Practicality and Veganism
As more research pours in the benefits of a plant-based diet are surfacing.

The fact that plant-based eating and veganism are being shown to lower rates of chronic diseases including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer is certainly reason enough to consider it.

Individuals taking medications to treat chronic illnesses are experiencing the benefit of a reduction in medication.

The benefit that attracts many to plant-based and vegan eating is the ease at which it helps to manage your weight!
